Lonely-Isles Miscellaneous Links & References --
Each
island page has the web links and book references which are
particularly relevant to that island. Sites and books included
must have a significant content about the island in question
otherwise it will not be included. However, there are many excellent
publications both on-line and in print which aren't specifically
about one particular island but still deserve mention. Therefore
lonely-isles presents a list of general links which we feel
will be of interest to the people who would read our site. As
always if you feel there are others which could and should be
included then drop us an email.

The
Scottish Islands - Hamish
Haswell Smith
To
be honest without this book I would have struggled to
put the site together. It may not have any pictures but
what it does have are Hamish's detailed maps and beautiful
illustrations. Islands which even the most serious island
hopper won't have heard of are featured and this really
is a book anyone interested in the islands around Scotland
must own.
Has
been dubbed "The Rosetta Stone" of Scottish
islands and once you see this book I'm sure you'll find
it hard to disagree.

When
I Was Young:Voices From Lost Communities In Scotland -
Timothy Neat
By
means of a series of first-person narratives, this book
tells the story of the spirit of individuals and communities
in the face of a harsh and unforgiving environment. Every
story told is associated with a Scottish community that
no longer exists or has been changed beyond recognition.
Haven't
yet read this book myself but it comes very highly recommended
by one of our forum regulars so that will do for me !!

Shetland
Island Guide - Jill Slee Blackadder, Iain Sarjeant, Wendy
Price
Shetland
is closer to the Arctic Circle than to London and was
ruled by Norway for over 800 years - longer than it has
been part of Scotland. This comprehensive guide traces
the history, landscape and nature of Shetland from the
earliest times to the present day. Distinctive maps, colour
photographs and drawings combine the lively text to describe
the dynamic mix of land, sea, life and legend that is
the Shetland Isles.
This
is a hardback book full of stunning photographs as well
as plenty of vital local information. One of the Colin
Baxter guides and as you would expect from Colin the photography
showcased is simply superb. For the price you'll struggle
to get a higher quality Scottish Islands book anywhere.
