About Lonely-Isles --
Lonely
Isles is a site about the abandoned and sparsely populated islands
of Scotland. Our country is surrounded my many of these fascinating
islands and we felt that they deserved to have a site dedicated
to them.
Lonely-isles
is not and never will be a site which attempts to tell you all
you ever need to know about an island. Think of us more as a
portal to the vast amount of information that exists out there
on the web. Our aim is to make you aware of what information
is out there in the form of books, web sites, dvd's etc. The
information sources we recommend will contain much more detail
on all of the islands featured. Having pointed you in the right
direction our job is done.
That's
not to say Lonely-Isles is simply a gateway...we also hope to
display as many photo's as we can find. In time we hope to take
many of our own and they will certainly feature on the site.
Brief histories and population trends will also feature with
more detail available in our recommended books and websites.
 |
One
book which deserves special mention is Hamish
Haswell Smiths excellent The
Scottish Islands (pictured left) . To be honest
without this book I would have struggled to put the site
together. It may not have any pictures but what it does
have are Hamish's detailed maps and beautiful illustrations.
Islands which even the most serious island hopper won't
have heard of are featured and this really is a book anyone
interested in the islands around Scotland must own.
Once
every island that can be featured is on-line the work
on the site will continue. Pages will be constantly reviewed
and updated as and when necessary. New photos will be
added from time to time and in general |
the
site will probably never stand still...hopefully there will
always be something new to see.
Thanks
for visiting Lonely-Isles.
